  Arab Human Rights Education Listserv

Listserv is the Regional Arab Division of the International Human Rights Education Association (HREA Listserv). It was established to facilitate the communication process between organizations and individuals interested in the issues of human rights education, and to facilitate the undertaking and information about the changes and developments taking place locally, regionally, and internationally, in the field of human rights education. The main language of the Group is Arabic. Participation in the Group is open to all individuals and organizations interested in the field of human rights education.

The main purpose of this service is to encourage dialogue and interaction, and to enrich discussions and debates around issues of human rights education in the Arab world, with the aim of reinforcing a perspective that would enhance the universality of human rights by realizing the position and needs of the Arab societies; and to crystallize a vision about human rights movement in the Arab world, in order to help in dealing with impediments and challenges facing the application of human rights standards in the Arab reality. The Group was established in cooperation with the Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies and the Human Rights Education Associates (HREA).

The Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies views human rights education as a starting point to get acquainted with the basic knowledge necessary to understand the human rights mechanisms, and then to enforce them and defend them, so they become an enabling tool. The Institute also asserts the universality of human rights, its integration and non-divisibility. Further, the Institute emphasizes on respecting the cultural privacy of the Arab region. The welcomed privacy is that which strengthens the individual's sense of dignity and equality and enriches his culture, and reinforces his participation in managing the affairs of his country.

Through the Group, the Institute aims at:

  • Providing a pulpit for participants to allow them exchange views, ideas, and experiences in the fields of education and spreading the human rights culture in the Arab region.

  • Offering the mechanism and principles of International human rights and communicating them.

  • Spreading the training and educational materials in the field of human rights education.

  • Establishing an electronic resource center on the Cairo Institute website, to allow interested individuals obtain materials on human rights.

  • Exchange of news and information about training cycles and conferences on human rights education available in the Arab region.

  • Spreading the new views and projects that serve human rights education, making them available to individuals and organizations participating in the Dialogue Group.

  • Establishing a network of volunteers on the Internet for those interested in human rights issues, which would allow them to mobilize their energies and employing them effectively in various aspects of the human rights movements in the Arab world, especially those serving issues of human rights education.

  • Benefiting from the various literature and arts to spread the awareness about human rights among various categories.

To activate the role of the Arab Group, it should be emphasized that principles of multiplicity as well as cultural, religious, and racial diversity in the Arab region should be respected, thus enhancing the culture of dialogue, and condemning all forms of exclusion, fanaticism and rejecting others, so that this would become the basis for a moral charter in dealings and practices with this Group. Facilitators of the Listserv have the right to hide documents or speeches which they believe do not agree with these bases. We appreciate your understanding of these measures.
