Jurists and politicians unanimously agreed that Egyptian reactions concerning the recently released European Parliament report were emotive, stressful, and lacked rationality and objectivity. The report included downright condemnation of the human rights situation in the country. Experts and Jurists request an Egyptian law to cope with the phenomenon of "trading with humans" | 31/05/2007

The Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies, CIHRS, organized a symposium on "The Tragedy of Trading with Humans" on Wednesday, 23rd of May 2007, in cooperation with the Arab Foundation for Migration Studies. The symposium addressed the perimeters of the tragedy, the abuse and manipulation of minor girls, the calamity of street children, crimes related to selling organs for transplant operations… Participants in the symposium included Mr. Oussama al-Ghazouli, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Arab Foundation for Migration Studies, Mr. Ragab al-Touhamy, Attorney at the Supreme Court of Appeal and State Council, Mr. Samy Abdel-Radi, Journalist in al-Masry al-Youm (The Egyptian Today) independent newspaper, Lamia Moustafa, researcher in the New Woman Foundation, Dr. Hassan Issa, full-time Professor of Psychology, Cairo University, and Dr. Mohammed Mattar, Professor of International Law, Johns Hopkins University. Progressive National Unionist Party (Tagamu') and Wafd Party Reject Constitutional Reforms and Request the Amendment of Article 2 of the Constitution | 07/03/2007

The Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies (CIHRS) organized a roundtable discussion on "The position of the Wafd and the Tagamu' parties vis-à-vis the Constitutional Amendments". Several academics, writers, jurists and leaders of Egyptian political parties participated in the meeting, which took place at CIHRS on Monday March 5th, 2007. Mr. Hussein Abdel Razeq, Secretary General of the Tagamu' Party and Mr. Mounir Fakhry Abdel Nour, Secretary General of the Wafd Party, both presented their respective parties perspective and vision. The ruling of the Supreme Administrative Court issued in December 2006 canceling the ruling of the Administrative Judicial Court in April 2006 granting the Bahaais the right to have their religion established in their official papers and IDs raised many concerns regarding the freedom of thought and belief within Egypt, which in turn is reflected in the discussions run by CIHRS in a workshop held on 24th of December 2006 under the title: "Dilemma of the Freedom of Thought in Egypt…in light of the ruling of the Supreme Administrative Court in the Bahaais case". » more
