This booklet aims at highlighting the problems of violence and torture in Egypt. It also touches briefly on the development of social reaction over the last ten years as an example of the development of the Egyptian human rights discourse. It presents a review of the civil society institutions working in the field of combating torture, and the means for communication with such organizations. This aims at enhancing the role of the civil society institutions in fighting torture and gaining more advocates for the issue of physical safety as a basic human right that cannot be revoked. The Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies (CIHRS) published a new book entitled "Experiences of Audio-Visual Media in Europe", which encompasses various studies on the development of visual media in Europe, and reviews European expertise in the development of mass media, particularly the British, French and Czech models. The book also contains criteria set by the Council of Europe in the domain of audio-visual media, in coordination with the publishing unit of the Council, in addition to selected chapters from the television report in Europe published by the Open Society Institute in 2005, in coordination with the media program of the Institute. The introduction of the book was written by Mr. Ahmed Hessou, Syrian journalist currently working at the German Broadcast, and the Arabic translation was edited by Mr. Ashraf Radi, Egyptian reporter at Reuters. The Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies (CIHRS) published a new book entitled 'Religion and Freedom of Expression: Freedom-Related Problems in Different Societies." The book covers various studies including the problem of the Freedom of Expression in the Danish Caricature Crisis; the problem of Freedom of Expression in Egypt; Freedom of Expression in the Jurisprudence of the Egyptian Judiciary and the European Court for Human Rights (ECHR) Judicial System.The book, edited by Ragab Saad Taha and introduced by Radwan Ziyada, comprised many studies by a group of experts, academics, human rights activists, poets, journalists, writers and judges. Writers include Salah Eissa, Hisham el-Bastawesi, Helmi Salem, Mahmoud el-Werdany, Bahey el-Din Hassan, Ali Mabrouk, Ezz el-Din Nageeb, Sameh Fawzi, Radwan Ziyada, Khaled Salah and Hafez Abo Seda in addition to other international experts. The Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies published a new documentary book entitled "Freedom of the Media and Fairness of Elections". The book encompasses standards listed by the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Opinion and Expression in his report to the Human Rights Commission in 1999 and the recommendations of the Committee of Ministers inside the Council of Europe (Strasbourg) of 1999 and their explanatory note. The book also includes a draft code of honor proposed by the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA) in addition to standards put forth by the International Journalist Federation on press code of ethics, and recommendations proposed by the Lebanese Association for Electoral Democracy.
